SYDNEY: A doctor at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne has proposed to test a cervical cancer vaccine in babies, with a view to adding the vaccine to the infant immunisation program.

The vaccine is currently being given to schoolgirls as part of the trials in which Suzanne Garland, the director of microbiology and infectious diseases (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/HealthScience/Cervical_cancer_vaccine_for_babies/articleshow/2314918.cms#) at the hospital, has herself played a leading role.

She is now making a US visit to meet representatives from the drug companies that make the vaccine. She will discuss with them the proposal to conduct trials in babies up to a few months old.

Professor Garland conducted company-funded trials for CSL's vaccine Gardasil and the rival GSK's vaccine Cervarix, the two companies that have her on their advisory boards. She is of the opinion that there are benefits to immunising babies instead of schoolgirls.

that was first in the Sydney Morning Herald, around... ?March 2007 ???

It will come. After all, with all these adolescent girls keeling over, and their mothers thinking, "My goodness for 12 years she's been fine, and now she's so sick, it must be the vaccine..." that's a major minus for Murk.

If you give it to babies, then how will parents know that their chronically sick, go nowhere babies, are sick from the vaccine?

That's a MUCH MORE SATISFACTORY outcome. :p

Well, they'll have to move fast. There have been a fair number of news stories about sick teenagers. Even vax loving parents may have a moment's doubt about giving this vaccine to an infant.

I wonder. I should go and start a poll on a vaccine loving mainstream board and see what the results are.

Which board are you thinking of? That could be an interesting bit of research.

I have put a poll up on a mainstream vaccine loving board I post on. hehe. Am I allowed to post a link to it? Or should I just post the results here?

I'd love to see the results. Check the user's whatsis for the rules on links, I don't remember if there is a rule.

I couldn't find any rule, so I guess it is okay to post a link. Will we be able to see the results or is it a members only forum?

I can read the responses, but I can't see the poll results without registering.

So far the responses support my suspicion that people don't trust this vaccine. But it is early days.

so far it looks like if they ever rolled this one out for babies they would need to employ some major marketing scare tactics first....... as we would expect :)

Yeah, I read the latest responses and even the pro-vax folks are sort of creeped out by that concept.

Something that makes me a bit concerned... they all seem to be worried about HPV vaccine in their babies to a certain extent... because of recent exposure of the side effects, I guess, but they're not normally concerned and vaccinate against everything else?? What makes them think that any other vaccine is any better?

They all just shot their pro vaccine argument right in the arse don't you think?

You could go to town on that 3Ms. ;)

Interesting point, Magical.

On the one side you have the assumption that pharma will push a crap vaccine that injures people for the big bucks...

On the other side you have the assumption that most vaccines have stood the test of time and are effective and not too dangerous--with the side assumption that the diseases ARE quite dangerous.

So I think that people can reconcile both positions as compatible if they don't look too hard at the folks defending and justifying vaccines. Who happen to be holding hands behind the curtain with the people who are pushing the HPV vax.

Magical I could. I so could. But I have banged my head against a wall with the same people there over and over and over again and TBH I am over them. But instead I post a question........ :D

Its funny isn't it... I made myself physically ill with online arguing. Until I learnt not to let it bother me as much. I suffer from nerve imflamation in my facial nerve when I get into confrontation or have shocking news. It manifested itself once as Bells Palsy now I just get terrible pain radiating through the nerve which takes about two weeks to calm down...I use tissue salts and high doses of Vit C, fish oils and take more magnesium than normal to help it go away.

Everytime it happens I can relate it back to me rising to arseholes and their eyes wide shut comments in chat rooms or comments sections. The problem for me is that I find the whole thing quite seductive and have issues with letting things go without me kicking and screaming.

So I like your approach 3Ms.... just ask questions in the future... good thinking.

I hate online debates because the people, generally, who are good at winning arguments mostly do it by nastiness. I know a couple of exceptions, though. I'm simply not good at arguing, so I don't do major stuff, just nibble around the edges and undermine a bit.

I know, I made myself sick over the arguments too to the point where I totally withdrew. I dont do arguing well either. Or I find that its the same point over and over and over and over and over and it gets a bit tedious.

but I must admit I am very surprised at the results of that poll. Only 1 person would vaccinate against 53 who wouldnt and 9 who would probably be convinced.

Interesting...

Next poll will have to be...

Will you give your children the Swine Flu vaccine... how will you feel if this choice is taken off you and it is compulsory?

You are right. Hypocritical responses there. Or should I say, very selective thinking.

Hehe, I wonder if they are wondering where all my questions are coming from :)

And yep, your the boss, hehe.

Been meaning to ask how you are BTW.
