So, I'm guessing there may be outbreaks of the measles in the future. Just in case does anyone have any suggestions re the best way to give vitamin A. My children (8, 5 & 3) have not had the MMr, they eat very well (and alot) but if they caught the measles how would one go about giving them extra vitamin A during the illness. Any advice would be appriciated. I want to be prepared.

My kids got measles earlier this year when their school had an outbreak. it was not really that bad at all. I gave them CLO for the vit A. I used the nordic naturals flavoured one as they will drink it. I also gave them SA. Both had varying symptoms but both were only acutely ill for 1 1/2 - 2 days the rest was nuisance value. I still maintain they have had worse colds from school.

What's CLO? Also, what exactly does the Vit A do? What kind of doses should you give children and babies? Does it help them get over it faster? Are there any appropriate homeopathic remedies to help them through it? My boys have had MMR  but you never know! And of course little miss isn't vaxxed.

CLO = cod liver oil. I think the deal is the measles virus chews thru the bodies vit A. When it gets thru the obvious easy to use bits, it starts on the retinal vit A. Hence the photophobia. I would not have a clue on doses as I have always let my kids just drink it. They seem to self regulate. Neither got photophobic either. None of the vaxed kids in kindy got measles where we were. Only the non-vaxed ones. Plus one adult who had been vaxed as a child. FTR my grand daughter got it from my kids. She has more junk food in a week than I have probably in a decade & then some. She is 2 1/2. She took a lot longer to develop the rash than my younger children. The critical phase was only 2 days for her too. Then her rash took a lot longer to go away. So basically the critical phase was the same but the annoying irritating before & after was much longer. She got photophobic too. As in had to watch TV with the curtains closed. I did give dd some CLO for her but I am not sure how much she actually got into her. A tsp a day maybe?

Thanks Seaweed, that makes sense. So if I can't give CLO (due to allergies) what other ways can I get Vit A into them? Sorry for the thread hijack!

I dunno. Thankfully mine would & could drink it, even the one who temporarily went off her food. Maybe try to bump up their vitamin A levels now with foods they can eat?

ZGT if you're taking omega 3 oils from fish oil, why can't your children have CLO which is a fish oil?

According to our immunologist (;)) it is not 100% guaranteed to be free from protein (and this has been confirmed by the manufacturers of Clinicians Omega 3) so therefore not safe for DS2, even though he has never tested positive to fish. I actually asked about fish a few weeks ago and was told we would likely do a challenge for it at the end of the year assuming his RASTs are still 0, which I assume they will be.
The problem will be to get DS2 to actually eat fish or take fish oil. I think it's the type of food that needs to be introduced early before they get too fussy otherwise it'll always be rejected :eyeroll:
As for me taking it, well I guess the risk of protein is low enough that if there was any in the final product it would be filtered by my body and not passed onto DD.
Well I'm guessing that's his theory behind it all. Till now I've been following his every word, but as you know I'm now learning that things may not be what they seem
Would be interesting to see if DS1 actually took some CLO. I tried giving him that Eye Q stuff awhile back and he wouldn't have a bar of it. Don't blame him though, fish and vanilla flavour, yum :D
Sorry again for thread hijack Justine :D

No problem ZGT, I think I'm onto it now. I am abit worried about the measles but at the same time we want the kids to catch it to make them stronger/robust. I figure 1. rest 2. no pamol and 3. vitamin A. That should do it. I had the measles and it didnt do me any harm!
