Does anyone follow moon planting times? I thought I'd give it a go this year but keep forgetting! I was all keen to get some seeds into trays this afternoon, but looked that calendar in my latest Organic NZ and I missed the date by a week or so! Is it worth waiting till next months opportunity or get some in now (I just wonder if the ones I might put in today will grow no differently or slower than ones I put in 3wks later on the "correct" date?). I'm sure waiting 3wks is no big deal, but I wanted to get a head start for my seelings so some will be ready to get into the ground mid-September.

Anyone have experience?

I used to follow one of those calendars, years ago. I never tried to test it out and this year I just stuck everything in the ground when time permitted.

Some folks swear by it, though.

I'd just go ahead and plant if I were you. Then you can take pictures of the plants every day and see how they do. In three weeks you can plant another lot and take pictures of those every day. Then compare. And report back.

You don't need to buy any magazine to do a calendar. Mine is one I made, and came from an old gentleman, who had always used one. I've used this for about 15 years with very variable results.

It's three bits of card all with different stuff on them. Here is a pdf scan of it whole. don't know if you can work it out...

Ultimately the biggest determinant will be the soil temperature in my experience...

Okay, the pdf opens perfectly on my computer desktop.. but no matter how many times I try it won't open from the website

so I've transferred a jpg to photobucket.

Here it is:

No, unfortunately the document doesn't open for me.

Yes to the soil temperature, I will put things out a few weeks later than what I have in the past and see how I go. I certainly notice the later seedlings that go in often overtake or at least catch up to the ones gone in sooner but obviously a bit cold still.

Think I'll put a tray of seeds up now and then another lot next month.

There's one bit there that doesn't come through and it's in first quarter after Don't prune and says: High sap run causes dieback.

If there's anything else you can't work out, let me know.

I think you might need to explain it to me.

Does the centre card just indicate today's date (so point it to the corresponding date)? The middle card I'm not sure how you would use it?? Looks really interesting though and I would really like to understand it as I could see it would be very useful.

Is the one I used many years ago. Not sure if it would work in the Southern Hemisphere.

I keep the paper clip with the full moon on the right date for the month.

all three cards are on a central core and all move.

If you just make the cards as you see, and put them together, and then move everything to the right places you will see how it works. I scanned it the way it should be for this month, but moved the paper clip up so that you could see the words.
