I rarely make/serve dessert but when I do, it is usually crumble. Here are some of the things I sneak in which my children otherwise don't eat. Last night was pear crumble with crystallised ginger scattered through the fruit. Not sure if I could get away with fresh ginger - might try dried ginger next time.
For the topping (a portion of whcih I mix with the fruit) I crushed some brazil and almond nuts and cloves with the mortar and pestle and then added mixed spice and cinnamon to the usual rolled oats/sugar/butter mix. Cook for about 40-50 minutes on 150 degrees celsius.

Hey ;)
Fruit crumbles have been a staple for us through winter. We've had masses of pears but we're not keen on eating them raw so I've been turning them into dessert which we don't ordinarily have either.
I slice the pears up, mix up some honey and juice from a lemon and pour over. Then sprinkle on some ground almonds and sometimes dessicated coconut and dollop some butter and nutmeg or cinnamon on top.
Ginger sounds good! How about grated ginger?

Hi W-F!
Love your recipe. I couldn't work out how to make crumble with honey instead of sugar the other day but now I do know - thanks. We have made a shift away from carbs for Fionn (which means for all of us) and into more protein (but not dairy apart from some yoghurt) so not too dissimilar to what you have been doing. I am still at the stage where I feel like I am in the kitchen all day and the food bill is enormous but I know (well I'm sure hoping, I have to go back to part time work again next week!) that this too will pass and I'll find a new cooking and budget rhythm.

Yeah, it took me a few months to get in the groove of new eating patterns and for the budget to ease up too. yell out if you need some help. Have you read The Specific Carbohydrate book?
