CONCLUSION: It is clear that the process of infant colonization needs to be studied further, since composition of the microbiota may impact on child health.
Again, such novel ideas being put forward.....

Although, serisouly, at least people are starting to ask these questions.... and I would not have thought to think about giving birth vaginally at home to ensure optimal colonization of my babies gut. I had many other reasons to home birth, but that was not one of them.

PS sorry I am posting all over the place - I don't actually know where to post these articles

maybe we should have a forum for "commensal bacteria"

This topic has been a frustrating passion of mine for years. Amongst many others.

this phrase here
Commensal microbes provide the major drive for maturation of the immune system. is the key.

MT - I have the utmost respect for the work you do and the depth to which you have explored the human body, the immune system, food and nutrients and promoting health. It is so very exciting to be finding these topics being discussed in medical literature that is being published today. For me it is deeply empowering to know that my intution was right on and I will never again feel like a helpless idealist. 'Natural' is no longer an iffy word for me and indeed worthy of the utmost respsect.

Perhaps a forum discussing just the gut in relation to immunity and *all* the factors that impact it's health or lack of health would be an asset.

eta: the article is quite facinating. I look forward to reading it more carefully.

But the problem is that the primary motive for studying it, is for novel drug mining.
