Last night I was one of six parents speaking for our local HS group on a panel for a workshop, Homeschooling the Rookie Year, aimed at new homeschooling parents or parents considering homeschooling.

I didn't know most of the other parents on the panel, so this was the first time I'd learned anything about their stories, and I was struck by the fact that the majority of the others mentioned significant health problems for their kids as part of their stories. Not ana allergies that they needed to stay out of the school environment to keep their kids safe, it sounded like serious things that were now resolved, but it was striking.

The kids and I have health things going on and I've had to examine and reject a lot of assumptions that I grew up with. It occurred to me that one of the benefits I've gotten from all this is that it's not a scary trip into the unknown anymore to question something I used to take for granted. I've done it during a very difficult time in my life, and now a lot of other decisions are easier to contemplate and I think easier to make.

And it occurred to me that a lot of the other parents there had a similar kick-in-the-pants to get them thinking about something unconventional and unknown (no one on the panel had, themselves, been homeschooled).
