Immunity to whooping cough lasts at least 30 years on average, much longer than previously thought, an analysis by researchers at the University of Michigan and the University of New Mexico shows.
The research, by U-M professor of ecology and evolutionary biology Pejman Rohani and his former postdoctoral fellow Helen Wearing, who is now an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico, is scheduled to be published Oct. 23 in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens.
Once thought to be under control, thanks to widespread childhood vaccination, whooping cough (pertussis) has been on the rise since the 1980s in the United States and several other countries. This increase has fueled concerns about the effectiveness of current vaccination practices and raised the question of whether whooping cough can ever be eradicated.

Dear Professor Rohani,
Here is a chapter from a book I wrote last year. From the last paragraph of page 468, I believe you will find an immunological explanation of why vaccine induced immunity is rubbish.
I’m not a doctor, but I don’t think it takes “being a doctor” to work this out.
Regards,
Hilary Butler.

His reply:
Thank you for your note. I guess by 'vaccine' you're referring to the aceullular vaccine? Which one specifically - there are numerous available with different immunogenic components. Also, please note that there is ample evidence that the whole cell vaccine afforded good protection.

My reply:
Dear Professor Rohani,
Did your server remove the chapter pdf attachment I sent you? I have reattached it. Perhaps your server will remove it again...
New Zealand has used the pertussis vaccine - both formulations - since the first vaccine came out. The official health department data and the many medical articles I have, prove that the vaccine has done nothing useful in this country. I can provide you with the forty plus year history of the vaccines abysmal failure, if you wish to have your year ruined....
The situation was exacerbated in New Zealand, originally, by the belief by most doctors that a vaccinated person is a protected person. Therefore, anything that looked like whooping cough in a vaccinated person was medically diagnosed as something else. There was a raft of quite creative diversionary diagnoses utilized to explain away a vaccine which didn't work. Now the medical profession have come round to the realization that the vaccine doesn't stop infection but hold on to the dogma that it will reduce infection severity. There are no NZ studies comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated children which prove that. Parents in this country have always had a health skepticism of "three months asthma" diagnoses, particularly when grandparents say, "oh, it's just whooping cough. You'll see. In X weeks, it will just go." And they are more often than not, proven right.
Please look on page 473 and 474 of the chapter, at the quote from this reference:
Cherry, J.D. et al. 2004. “Determination of serum antibody to Bordetella pertussis adenylate cyclase toxin in vaccinated and unvaccinated children and in children and adults with pertussis.” Clin Infect Dis,
38(4): 502–7, February 15. Epub 2004, January 29. PMID: 14765342.
“Primary infections with either B. pertussis or Bordetella parapertussis stimulated a vigorous antibody response to ACT. In contrast, patients in whom DTP and DTaP vaccines failed had minimal ACT antibody responses.” ... " Of particular interest is the lack of a significant ACT antibody response in children for whom the DTP or DTaP vaccines failed. This induced tolerance is intriguing and may be due to the phenomenon called “original antigenic sin”. In this phenomenon, a child responds at initial exposure to all presented epitopes of the infecting agent or vaccine. With repeated exposure when older, the child responds preferentially to those epitopes shared with the original infecting agent or vaccine and can be expectedto have responses to new epitopes of the infecting agent that are less marked than normal. Because both vaccines contained multiple antigens (i.e., PT, FHA, PRN, and fi mbriae), the patients who had been vaccinated responded to the antigens that they had been primed with and did not respond to the new antigen (i.e., ACT) associated with infection.” (Emphasis mine.)
In order to quickly and successfully clear a pertussis reinfection, a person has to mount a speedy antibody reaction against ACT. Where "original antigenic sin" takes place, that cannot happen.
Vaccine induced immunity results in vaccinated people who harbor silent infection and are unable to clear it... and pass it on to other people. Naturally immune people clear any reinfection quickly and don't spread it through the community.
For over a decade now, there has been a large body of work on ACT on pubmed, which clearly explains the biological mechanism whereby pertussis vaccine don't work.
It's just a blind spot in medical vision that prevents honest discussion on this point in my opinion.
In order to try to formulate pertussis vaccines which might induce immunity similar to natural immunity, would take a huge amount of research, new studies, lengthy regulatory approval etc, so it's just easier to keep on pushing the message that "more is better" when that's just nonsense.

Wow. I finally finished reading the chapter from your book - off to pubmed now. I will have to order your book some time soon. You seriously do rock :D and :write:

The reason that the vaccines don't work is that ACT is secreted by bacteria only AFTER adherance, and solely in order to act as a sort of force-field against macrophages etc. ACT isn't intrinsically in the bacteria itself... it's produced as part of the infection process, specifically against part of the immune system.
Growing the bacteria in culture medium doesn't appear to create very much ACT at all. At least from what you can gather from the medical literature.
David Witt, chief of infectious disease at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Rafael, Calif. presented his findings Monday at a conference in Chicago. He came to the conclusion that whooping cough vaccination faded over just three years as reported in this article : http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11263/1176014-114-0.stm#ixzz1YVNXOsuI
Marin County has a reputation for anti-vaccine sentiment, and Dr. Witt said that when he started the study, he expected to see the illness concentrated in unvaccinated people. But more than 80 percent of the children who developed whooping cough in Dr. Witt's study were fully vaccinated.
Versions of the vaccine are made by two companies -- Sanofi Pasteur and GlaxoSmithKline. The companies have acknowledged that the immunity conferred by the vaccine wanes over time, but they declined to comment on Dr. Witt's study.
French reports of dr Witt study ( all coming from the AFP news agency...! do not report " But more than 80 percent of the children who developed whooping cough in Dr. Witt's study were fully vaccinated. No commentary possible !!!)

Again, typical. Information censorship is mandated when it comes to vaccines.
