I did not realise this was a common circulating illness. Apparently there is an outbreak in the town where I live. I thought it was confined to CAFOs :o
I was just at the park with DS when a mum ran up and took her child away saying he has foot and mouth and he is contagious. He looked fine, other than a few spots on his hands. Ie he did not look horribly sick, dehydrated etc.
Anyway, I am now going to start reading up about this, but was wanting a head start if anyone has some interesting material.
TIA

For starters:

OK - similar virus, but not what happens in CAFO's :o
Interesting that it can cause AFP. It is associated with Coxsackie A virus and Enterovirus 71 (EV71).

What are CAFOs? :o

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation - factory farming of animals who are penned into their own excrement and fed corn and animal byproducts and heavily dosed on antibiotics to keep disease in check.
I'm into wiki today http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factory_farming

dd#3 had it when she was about 2. It was relatively minor. She just nursed more & I gave her some SA. I did read somewhere as it is a cocksackie virus you need to avoid needles for some time after as they can cause peripheral nerve damage & cause paralysis in the limb. Cocksackie viruses can be confused with polio. It sounds really  like that in B&W but there was no chance of any needles around here so I did not collect any evidence on that one.

DS had it when he was about 18mths old. He flew through it. I didn't even notice he had anything wrong with him until day 2 of him complaining of a sore mouth. :o I hadn't really thought too much of it and hadn't heard of HF&M (except F&M like you lol - maybe your title needs updating since they are two different things). It was only when I noticed the white ulcers in his mouth that upon checking his hands and feet he had little blisters there too.
However, a friend of his ended up dehydrated and unable to drink from the pain - from my understanding, that is the main concern with HF&M.
I had an added concern in that I was due with DD, and for a newborn to get HF&M is a different story (from memory, there can be issues with the heart). So I was quite cautious when she was born (and they were to share cloth nappies so I put her in sposies until I was sure there was no more shedding that may get through etc).
I think there are several strains.

My DS1 has had this twice! Once when he was 11 months old and the second time he was about 16 months old and I was pregnant with DS2. I remember at the time my OB said to just be really careful with changing his nappies as I was pregnant so I just made sure I always wore gloves when changing him (which I was doing anyway as the eczema on my hands is so bad I do everything in gloves so I don't have to wash my hands so often!).
Anyway, in terms of my DS1 - with the first time his legs developed pinprick type rash, very fast, within 1 hour, which scared me half to death because back then meningococcol meningitis was topic of the day. Took him straight down to my dr and was diagnosed with HF&M. He wasn't terribly unwell. He had a very low grade fever, a bit of a sore throat, and a bit unsettled. He had very minimal blisters, really just half a dozen or so all up, and none in his mouth that I ever saw, just on his toes and fingers.
The second dose was much the same, if not better. No fever that I remember, not even very unsettled. Again, only a few little blisters and again not in his mouth as far as I could tell.
He was BF the first time, but I think he would've weaned by the time he got the second dose, or if he was still feeding it most definitely would've been dry feeding as my milk dried up very quickly once I fell pregnant with DS2.
CAFOs - what's that?

Yes, I should update the title - I got the name in Hebrew and then asked for it in English and the mum had broken English....
CAFO = Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation - I explained a bit more in an earlier post.

My kids were exposed to hand, foot and mouth years ago but never got it. Don't think it's anything to be concerned about but can't pass comment really as I haven't experienced it first hand (excuse the pun!)
My eldest daughter had it also at about the age of 2. Similar story, few blisters. Don't remember her being very sick. She was more upset that she couldn't play with other kids.

:LMAO:
I am not worried about DS getting it, I was just surprised to hear that it is a common disease.... until I realised I had the names mixed up. It looks like the kind of disease that would be a good candidate for a vaccine one day.... in X number of years we will all be told how this disease killed and maimed. :alien:

Well....where Hilarys Foot in Mouth may differ and not incur any blisters as such I am sure you are right there will be a vaccine for this condition one day... Getting her to sit down and be vaccinated though will be tricky.:giggle:

Getting any vaccine into me would be a tricky business. I would require major breaches of all democratic principles on the part of the medical system and the government. however, believe it or not, I still have no trouble in literally stuffing my toes in my mouth.
You needed to know that.. not. :alien:
