Interesting and this is exactly what we need more of finding out what is on our back doorstep and utillising it... especially if we were to ever lose our supplements to augement our health and our ill health.
Some of you know that I had a herbalist come to stay with us in May from Canada for a fortnight. he has taught me everything I know so far which is little compared to him. His main intention was to meet with me who he had been talking to and helping for the last couple of years but to show me how to use what was around my own environment. You could honestly be harvesting and processing something everyday and still have more to do...He saw things I would walk past everyday and be in raptures!
Even if you would make a tea everyday from a range of herbs you would be doing well. As long as you kept the brew changing all the time.
lets face it those who don't believe in herbs still cook with them (I would challenge that anyone never uses a herb) and still reap the benefits every single day. Cultures have always used herbs to flavour food but their motivation is so much higher. Somewhere along the line they have listened to their bodies and seen that certain things just make them feel better.... for example so many use herbs for digestion and integrate these into their everyday meals... how many Westeners have forgotten to listen, don't use these herbs and suffer every day of their lives with a simple affliction such as indigestion which left unchecked will lead to all other problems
My God so far is nature and what has been put here to help us keep well. This is what I can get my head around and I'm happy to have got that far. it's all there in your backyard. Has God gifted herbs for me and my human body?
I read something and it may have been on this board... those very people who are lieing in bed dying from an illness probably have the very thing that will save them not 10 metres away from their reach... so true.
True kitchen alchemy is an awesome thing to behold and the more we share between us the better... because this is what will empower us to become self sufficent in our health... anyone can do this,it's so simple, but it will give you the edge that so many others think they can get through science and whitecoats.
I feel all inspired to get started again... I had the most amazing stock of potions and I have given them all out to friends and family. I hac my Mother come around the other day who has the worst gastric reflux to get her second bottle of gahalangal and cayenne tincture... seems it is doing the trick after trying everything for a decade...wonder if she has Hi pylori... I need to replenish. In my kitchen I have Hilarys books with my tinctures all lined up on top... right now I am down to my last ones which are gorse... no one seems to want to use gorse!!! good liver tonic.

This lady is an Austrian living in Wellington.
My God is not nature. My God created Nature, and one of my favourite books is Maria Trebens book "Health through God's Pharmacy."
As far as I am concerned, a big bang is simply a ludicrous proposition....
I would not use anything close to my environment, because of the amount of sprays and benzene and heavy metals from petrol etc..... but I intend to explore out in the wops a bit more...

Thank you for this link MT. I used to read it and then lost it. I've learnt so much more just browsing it this afternoon. We even had (wild & weedy at our place) nasturtium leaves and flowers in tonight's salad as Brigitte's blog got me in the right mindset to use all I could.

2# What a great posting! Thanks for that Magical. You are so right to say we are all reallly into herbs, even the most cut off from nature non gardener.
You get people who say they would never use herbs as medicine, and yet drink fermented grape juice (wine), hops extract (beer), tea & coffee, and use medicines like asprin (originally derived from willow), digitalis etc.
Vegetables like asparagus are fairly strong diuretics and exert an effect on the kidneys. Beetroot is good for the liver, while pesto made with corriander will extract mercury out of your body!
Didn't know gorse tincture is good for the liver though. Is that just the yellow flowers, or the whole plant. How does it compare do you think to milkthistle. By the way, I know where to get some milkthistle seeds, if anyone wants some.
