Australian Influenza Surveillance Summary Report No.25, 2009

I like Figure 1 with the laboratory confirmed cases and then the arrow showing "vaccination commenced" when the cases are down to almost nothing. Someone should keep this on file for when they start proclaiming next spring that it was the vaccine that saved everyone in the northern hemisphere.

Also, Table 2 on page 9...if the higher rate of mortality is with the older population (as per their stats), then why the push to get kids vaccinated? It looks to me like more younger people are getting it but they don't seem to have the highest mortality rate. Yet, media back in Canada (and other countries I imagine) are telling seniors to take a back seat and save the vaccines for the toddlers. Hmm...

Of particular note is the difference in the age distribution of the novel influenza virus to seasonal influenza and the increasing median age as the severity of the disease progresses: 21 years for all confirmed cases; 31 years for hospitalised cases; 45 years for ICU cases; and 54 years for deaths.

And the tamiflu resistance, well, duh, anyone can see that coming the way they're handing it out to anyone with a fever.
