I wonder if this is linked to the mass world attack on smoking in public places and smokers being made the scum of society LOL.
Evidence says smoking can help prevent alzheimers too.

I heard of one mum who basically pickled her family in onions in 1918. Onions at every meal. None of them got the flu. Almost as stinky as smoking...

When I read the book about the epidemic and the various things people tried to stave it off, the bit with the onions stuck in my mind. It sounded like a good idea, plus onions are cheap, relatively speaking.
