Hmmm... you lost me here:
More than 16,500 lives could be saved each year in the United States alone if our under-5 mortality rate was the same as Iceland. If the U.S. rate of under-5 mortality was similar to that of France, Germany and Italy (all 4 per 1,000 live births), over 12,000 child lives could be spared.
I couldn't quite see what point you were driving at there....
I think whoever wrote it, needs to rethink the ending, so that improvements for USA are clearly spelled out...

It turns out to be hard to find numbers on childhood mortality. Kids die. But how many and for what reasons?
The one thing that is perfectly clear is that infectious diseases are a minor problem, including influenza.

It would be interesting to compared deaths from influenza with rates of chronic disease for instance. But the use of Iceland, France, gemany and Italy dilutes whatever is the main point you are trying to make.
The thing is the lack of an ending, robs the article of a major thrust.
