I am always telling people maori potatoes have slower released sugars than modern potatoes. I am sure I read it somewhere but I can't find anything online. Does anyone know for sure? I did find out when I was googling tho that our kumara has a GI higher than a nadine potatoe. The sweet potato of low GI fame is actually more like a yam.

No, I've not found that reference. That's new to me. But it wouldn't surprise me as the maori potatoes cook up different.

I don't eat the purple kumara. it's horrible. But will eat Beaujolais....

lol! my kids love kumara but refuse point blank to eat the purple ones. They prefer the ones with golden flesh. Interestingly they like roast yams the best which according to the GI figures I found are way lower than kumara & more in line with the "sweet potatoes" that the overseas low carb people refer to.

Thinking about it, I think it was Kay Baxter who said they had different sugars. So who knows! I will have a good google later when the kids are in bed as I am sure I did once find something. It is probably hidden in a pdf somewhere. I do know tho of people who get all sorts of nasty reactions to supermarket potatoes but are fine on urenika & the real old varieties of maori potato.

All I know is potatoes are really high glycemic, and diabetics are advised to stay off them.

I like eating the purple kumeras that have deep red flesh. They are nicer than the normal red kumeras, which I don't mind at all to eat. I admit the golden kumeras are yummier.

Taro is my absolute favourite but is so expensive. Bet is low GI though.

I've not ever tried taro. I prob should one day. How do you cook it? We are not so hot on the purple kumara. The kids wont touch them. Altho I did get some kumara the other day which had a sorta purple ring thru the middle. Hawaian blue kumera? they were nice.
