I am in love with sodium bicarbonate today. Why? Well let me tell you.
I woke up at 2:30 this morning to find something biting me. I jumped out of bed freaking out as I had killed a white tailed spider earlier that evening. Fortunately it wasn't a spider but a nasty black ant. Now I am somewhat allergic to ants and the bites were incredibly painful and were starting to come up in big red welts. Here's were the bicarb comes in. A quick google told me that ant bites are acidic. Sodium bicarbonate is an alkali so I quickly made up a paste, spread it on the bites and went back to bed. I couldn't believe my eyes when I got up this morning and there is virtually no trace of the bites - no bit red welts and no itching!
I am so impressed with this stuff that I thought it deserved it's own thread. Here's what I use sodium bicarbonate for. Please add your own ideas to the list as well. Hopefully we can make it to 101 :)
1. Effective against ant bites. Mix up a thick paste with water and apply to bites.
2. Fridge deodoriser. Put bicarb in an open container with a few drops of vanilla essence to absorb odours.
3. As an alternative to cream cleansers for cleaning. Mix with water to form a paste or simply sprinkle on a damp cloth.
4. For stinky kitchen drains. Pour a cup of bicarb down the drain. Follow with some brown vinegar.
5. To get grease stains out of clothes. Mix bicarb with dishwashing liquid to form a paste and work into grease stain. Wash clothing as usual.
6. As a deodorant. Either mix bicarb with equal parts of corn starch and use as a powder deodorant or use a recipe like this (http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2008/07/homemade-deodor.html) one to make a cream style. You may need to reduce the amount of bicarb if you experience irritation.
