When we make a choice, how do we respond to an advertisement, or promotion of a drug or vaccine?

What assumptions are made by advertisers, about how the "collective will" thinks?

What do YOU see and feel when you see an advertisement like this USA ad for Motrin?

Attractive mom, healthy looking, happy kid. Fever must be bad. Motrin must be good.

After all, it's a :hail: paediatrician's choice, and they're the expert, so what would I know?

And fooling around with fever is stupid....

Possible interpretations:

As if a fever is a battle to be won, and the attractive, smart, headstrong mama "never surrenders" to the evil that is the fever.

As if leaving a fever untreated, or using nothing other than Children's Motrin is "fooling around".

Either way...:eyeroll:

Gosh, you know, my mother never gave me anything special for a fever. She just made sure my baths were nice and warm. At least this I don't have to fight my husband on. The army actually taught him getting rid of a fever is bad. Meanwhile, they let the rest of the country think otherwise. And I'm not supposed to be a conspiracy theorist.

That ad might also make some moms feel like a bad mom if they don't give Motrin to their sick child. This ad will somehow manage to overpower that little voice in a momma's heart saying 'it's ok it's ok if she's got a little fever' because fever is a war that has to be defeated and a good mom never surrenders!

The power of an simple image with two words! Mind-blowing!

Yup :D But.. how many mothers can actually rationalise the fact that they have been untruthfully manipulated?

Makes me mad that the media can be used to manipulate people. For me, personally, I ignore advertisements in general, as I find them irritating. Ones like that are, to me, patently transparent. I know that i am not immune to advertising, but I try to be aware of what I am seeing, esp. in regard to my behaviour.
