Both my 1 yr old son and myself have a tummy bug. Vomiting and the big D. I had a thought it might be Rotavirus but am not sure since the symptoms are so similar to other tummy viruses.

I am replacing lost fluids as best I can and an trying to be sure he doesn't get dehydrated (that is my biggest concern). He seems a bit better in that he has not vomited in over 12 hours, but the runs continue. I am doing both since I seem to have caught it from him. Any suggestions for remedies or things I can take to ease the symptoms would be very much apprecited!

Check out this thread and the chapter MT posted from "From One Prick to Another" ;)

Also raspberry jam is reported to be excellent for knocking off tummy bugs. If you can get one of the sugar free ones like St Dalfour even better. Some probiotics certainly wouldn't hurt either to replenish gut flora.

Hope you are both feeling better soon :)

old-fashioned remedies for diarrhea:

avoid fruit unless cooked. cooked apples are helpful. rice is great.

No sugar, no wheat. A good probiotic or high quality plain yoghurt would be good.

Make a tea from one cinnamon quill, about ten cloves and a thumb size of ginger peeled and cut up. Boil all this up with good clean water. Leave the lid on while it boils for about 5 minutes, then turn off and let it steep with the lid still on for about 10 minutes. If you have an active manuka honey you can sweeten it with this.

If you can get Malcolm Harkers eutherol or verm expel then these are excellent for tummy bugs however would be hard for the baby to take, they are a bit like fire water. I can't remember if you are in NZ or not.

I am in the US. Thanks for the replies...I am curious about something though. Hopefully someone can enlighten me.

I have no idea what type of bug was brought into our house but we all got it. I thought that breastfeeding was highly protective against all types of diarrhea, not just Rotavirus??? My son is breastfed so I'm surprised he got this bug.

I'm doing a lot of reading at the moment on breastfeeding, and yes, there is a lot that breastfeeding does... it's amazing really. But it only does that if you are immune. If you as the mother are not immune, then breastfeeding will modify the virus using the inate part of the immune system in the milk, but it won't prevent the infection totally.

If you are immune to rotavirus though, then technically, your breastmilk should reduce the infection down to something really minor. Babies get repeat rotavirus infections. It takes several doses before solid immunity is built.

Well if it was Rota (which I actually don't think it was) than I certainly didn't have immunity as I was the sickest of the whole family!

 when I was reading a book called "The History of Poliomyelitis" by Dr J. R. Paul, one of the standout memories, were the numbers of viruses which caused strange syndromes. Some were like polio; some were stomach viruses, some were just plain weird... NONE of them were ever identified, and all disappeared as epidemics, way before anyone could start to work out what the problem actually was.

It makes you wonder just how many of those sorts of amorphous, random diseases there are floating around.

Yeah. Another good reason for not vaccinating and ensuring that your immune system is equipped to do what it is designed to do - fight all those random nasties!

How are you and your baby doing today?
